"Skanda Sashti Kavacham in Malayalam " The Skanda Sashti Kavacham is a classic text of Hindu devotional literature. The text has been highly influential in the development of devotional poetry and art such as bhakti poetry and kirtana, which make use of musical instruments. This scholarly translation by Dr. Gopi Krishna is written in poetic meter. It has been translated from the Sangita Ratna Samhita to aid persons who may not be fluent in Sanskrit or Tamil and who may refer to this sanskrit classic while performing kirtana at home or while singing hymns at temples. The text is set in the Malayalam language. The verses of this classic are presented in this book under three chapters namely Vācaspati, Sankara, and Dwaita. Each of these chapters is mentoned at the beginning of each section of the sections. The book was edited by Dr. Gopi Krishna and published by Kalyana House, Pune-410417, Maharashtra India. The first (Panchakshara) deals with faith in the Devi, the second (Saptakavacha) deals with devotion to Saptarishis, and the third (Raajaprakaasha) deals with liberative devotional practices. The meaning of Skanda Sashti Kavacham in Malayalam is given below: 1. "Skanda" means "Sun" and "Sashti" means "occupation". The first kavacham briefly mentions the manner in which Maha Vishnu sunders as a two-armed warrior armed with a blood-dipped spear and a bow. It is believed that on this day Lord Maha Vishnu comes from heaven to vanquish asuras and other evil forces, as the Sun vanquishes darkness. 2. "Chaturvarga" means "the four aims of human life". This section elaborates on Brahman, Dharma, Artha and Moksha, the aims of human life. It cites examples from Hindu mythology to illustrate importance of Sanskrit learning for achieving these aims. 3. "Saptakavacha" means "the seven branches". This section briefly mentions the qualities and virtues of Saptarishi and also of the seven Vedangas and seven stages of wisdom. 4. "Raajaprakaasha" means "illumination". Here, emphasis is given on the supremacy of supreme Truth (Brahman), and on how it should be realized through constant meditation.
